El elefante birmano de Uriel Quesada: una transgresión al imaginario nacional

Abstract

Partiendo de la investigación de Carlos Sandoval sobre la inscripción del “otro” nicaragüense en la sociedad costarricense, se explora cómo el cuento “El elefante birmano”de Uriel Quesada trastoca las metáforas sobre la inmigración del imaginario costarricense actual, a nivel del relato y el metarelato (una adaptación del ensayo “Shooting an Elephant” de Georges Orwell). En resumen, se relata la historia de un policía costarricense que, mientras persigue a un asesino nicaragüense, recuerda aquella historia que le contó a su hijo sobre un oficial británico responsable de la muerte inútil de un elefante birmano.

Based on Carlos Sandoval’s research on the inscription of the Nicaraguan “other” in Costa Rican society, this study explores how the short story by Uriel Quesada, “El elefante birmano” treats the metaphor of Costa Rican imagery about the immigration today, on the level of the narative and meta-narrative (an adaptation of “Shooting an Elephant” by Georges Orwell). In summary, this is the story of a Costa Rican police officer who, while chasing a Nicaraguan criminal, remembers a story he told his son about a British offficer, responsible for the futile death of a Birman elephant.
