De rituales y festividades: música colonial en la provincia de Costarrica

Abstract

La falta de producción historiográfica y musicológica sobre la música colonial costarricense motiva el artículo, donde se trata el por qué de la inexistencia de una tradición creativa musical en Costa Rica en ese tiempo. También se preocupa por interpretar el papel de la música en la sociedad colonial y por explorar los diferentes ámbitos sociales en los que la música se practicaba en ese tiempo. Se sitúa, a la práctica musical dentro de los límites de los espacios de sociabilidad existentes en la época, especialmente las actividades religiosas, el ceremonial cívico, la fiesta profana y la milicia

This article is motivated by the absence of a musicological and historical bibliography dealing with colonial music in Costa Rica. The need to find an explanation to the total lack of a creative musical tradition in the country during the colonial times is also a motivation for the work. Therefore, the article makes an interpretation of the role of music in colonial society and explores the varied social spaces where music was practiced. Music was basically performed in spaces of sociability existing at the time, especially in religious activities, civic ceremonies, mundane celebrations and military activities.
